天国的白雪公主
Rangiku Matsumoto Voice Over:
Previously on Bleach: Across the Dimensions:
My taicho is finally growing into a man. He met the current fifth division taicho, Shirahime Thorne, when she was part of the eleventh division. Many things happened since then. She died and then was resurrected in the human world.
Losing her once was bad enough. Now it almost happened again.
After Shirahime was wounded in a battle against Aizen’s forces, he used her zanpakuto’s shikai to try and save her. It did not go as planned. She nearly died and is now recovering in the human world at her father’s shop.
URAHARA SHOP
Two days after Shirahime had finally woke, Lafiel Urahara executed her plan.
Family gatherings had never been a strong point with Shirahime Thorne and even now that she was a shinigami, they still grew tedious and full of apprehension. Lafiel was a shinigami much like Nemu, a mod soul and gigai combined. She handed Shirahime a cup of green tea. She did the same to Toshiro Hitsugaya who sat next to Shirahime.
Shirahime eyed Lafiel suspiciously, caught only slightly off guard by the blue eyes that looked so much like her own. Kurotsuchi Taicho could have made them different, perhaps golden, but he had insisted making her as much like Thorne as possible. Lafiel looked at least five years younger than her and Lafiel’s powers were much different from her own. After Lafiel as a mod soul failed to separate Shirahime’s human and soul form, Lafiel took on a much more interesting life. Although failed at her first purpose, Lafiel absorbed some of Shirahime’s memories. No one yet knew if she had any of Shirayukihime’s—the Princess of Heaven and Shirahime’s past life.
Shirahime preferred it that way. She had enough issues with Shirayukihime to last any amount of past lives. She didn’t, however, prefer the makeshift date set up for her. Toshiro—Shiro—as she called him was red with anticipation.
“Thank you, Ms. Urahara,” he said graciously. Lafiel smiled, stifled a giggle, and nearly ran inside, no doubt to report back to Kisuke Urahara.
“You could call her Lafiel,” Shirahime suggested.
“Yeah.”
“Just being polite,” she finished his unspoken thought. Shirahime looked to the side away from him. “What do you want to talk about?”
“Anything? How have you been?”
“You mean since the Sou Taicho relieved me of duty? Fine. Feel my dripping sarcasm.”
“It’s for your own health. You can’t take battles like we can.”
“I’m the reincarnation of a pretty pissed off Heaven Princess, as everyone and everything are so fond of reminding me, and I can’t take battle?”
“You’re human. You could die.”
“Been there, done that. Several times actually. Besides, the new mod soul from Mayuri has been working.”
“The royal family expects you to be protected. Momo can handle the fifth division.”
“No, she can’t. She’s still in love with Aizen—I’ll explain the psychology later.”
“No, I think she loves you.”
She looked at him in disbelief.
“Um,” he turned away, embarrassed. “I mean, Daichi, too. Yachiru tells me of her dream of attending their wedding.”
“What?” she asked. She heard a faint sound and figured one of her parents were listening. “I’m happy they’ve heard the babies talk,” she said quickly.
Shiro’s face turned red.
“Somehow, I think Yachiru already looks forward to being an aunt.” She paused. “Wait, since when does Yachiru tell you those things and not me?”
Toshiro looked away. “Well, um . . . .”
“Shiro Taicho?” she prompted, using her nickname for him.
He looked away.
“Toshiro Hitsugaya, my former taicho, please tell me why my daughter who looks much younger than her younger brother discusses that with you? Is there a reason why she doesn’t say it to me?”
“Um, well before you came back, Yachiru and I got close.”
She raised her eyebrow. “Yes. And?”
“Since Crown Prince Shiroyuki accepted her as his daughter, well, she’s decided she likes having more than one father.”
“Sounds like her,” she admitted.
“And . . . she thought I should be her dad, too.”
“And you’re okay with this?”
“As long as she doesn’t say it in front of others. I think Kenpachi would not be happy.”
“I think I can decide who my child’s father is. And if she wants to, that’s okay.” She took his hands in hers. “Thank you for being there for her.”
“Of course, Shirahime, I’ll always be there for her, for you, Daichi, Raiko. I feel like -,” he looked away. He hoped he had the courage to admit this. “You’re family to me. You, your children, Rangiku and Momo. I don’t want that ever to change. Even if you marry someone else.” He drew on courage and looked up at her pleadingly. “Will you really marry Kenpachi?” His next sentence nearly fell out of his mouth: “Rangiku says it’s the only way to avoid the royal mandate.”
She curved her lips in a half smile, half laugh. “Not the only way. Besides, Rangiku might get angry. She’s jealous enough.”
“But if you don’t want to marry Shiroyuki, then who else? Kurosaki?”
“Ichigo is too young. He’s not even an adult. I don’t care who he was in the past, but I am not marrying some kid.”
Shiro hung on her last few words. He was much older than her, but in spiritual maturity, he still looked like a teenager. Some even mistook him for Rangiku’s ward, but usually only on the days they went to the public springs in Soul Society.
He drank his last bit of tea, barely aware of when he had drunk the rest of it. “I’ll look after everyone for you. Rest easy.” Standing up, he held her right hand. He bowed his head and touched his forehead to her hand, a pledge of loyalty and service to those in the royal family. “I hope you find who you are looking for.” The red rose to his cheeks.
“I already have. One day he’ll mature enough to take on Shiroyuki. Shiroyuki isn’t bad; he just wants to make sure I will be protected. Shiroyuki owes his loyalty to Hyorinmaru. You of all people should remember that.
“Shiro, stop hiding who you are. I don’t know why you do it, but you do understand I’d feel uncomfortable with someone who looks the same age as my son? Be yourself.”
He looked nervously at the door.
“Come on, don’t be so afraid. Fine,” she said, holding out her hand.
“Oh, no,” he tried to stop her.
“First Revival.”
A thin barrier of ice surrounded them. Shiro noticed they could not be seen.
“As I was saying,” she said. “Be yourself.”
Shiro let go, transforming into himself, his true self. That self that actually looked like an adult.
She leaned in and kissed him, stars exploding in his mind. She pulled back. “I accept you, Shiro. But if you want that again, you should look like this. His lips met hers again, and he felt as if his heart would leap out of his chest.
“Marry me, Shirahime?” he asked.
“Sister, sister!”
They heard Lafiel from outside the barrier.
“Quick, I heard Yoruichi-ma saying something like no more grandchildren. Shiro Taicho, I think Kisuke-da is coming to kill you. Better get moving.”
“Grandchildren?” he stammered.
“Yeah,” Shirahime admitted, “I seem to be good at picking up children and adding them as my own. Maybe sometime in this life, I’ll actually go through the regular process.”
Shirahime’s barrier shattered, and the sun shone upon them again.
“Um,” he said, “you didn’t answer my question.”
Shirahime saw her parents coming outside. Kisuke looked mad.
“I still have shackles to remove. And you have an irate father to run away from. I think he heard about Daichi and Momo. On top of that, this.”
She turned to Kisuke.
“Toshiro Hitsugaya!” he called.
“Best be going, Shiro Taicho. I will find a way to destroy Aizen. One that doesn’t hurt so much. Take care of everyone. I will send Lafiel tomorrow. Perhaps she can help Momo, if even just a little.”
Shiro usually did not run from danger. Today, he did. Yet even as Kisuke tried to follow him, he thought, “One day, the royal family will accept me.”
He heard Yoruichi’s voice. “Aijou,” she said to Shirahime, “no making babies at our home.”
“And does that apply to you and dad?”
“That’s not the issue.”
“So, making babies in Soul Society will be okay with you? Got it.”
“No, that’s not right!” Kisuke shouted. “Hitsugaya, no making babies in Soul Society either!”
“Anything you say, dad,” he laughed, for once feeling free of his usual serious demeanor. He looked down and realized he forgot something. He changed back into his normal self.
The sun set on some of his doubts and fears. He would one day no longer be the boy genius but would be a man, a man worthy of this new Princess of Heaven.
