Chapter Two: In the Family
SOUL SOCIETY – FIFTH DIVISION – DAICHI THORNE TAKEYA’S ROOM
[Alternative M Version Scene:]
Daichi Thorne Takeya, son of his taicho and third seat of the division, shot up in bed. He gasped for air as he tried to not imagine the meaning of the feeling creeping over him.
Beside him, Momo Hinamori, the fukutaicho of the division stirred.
She slept in his room because she could not sleep. When taicho went missing, she had no peace. Daichi felt better not being alone. He supposed his grandparents would have taken this the wrong way, but they were only sleeping. Not something else.
Daichi thought one day they could be closer, this relationship going further. Perhaps after they got married. Which would be after his mother was free of the abuse from the royal family.
“Final Revival. No, please no,” he begged. “It’s mother.”
“What?” asked Momo as she sat up beside him. “Taicho?”
Daichi grabbed his shoes. He didn’t stop to kiss her.
Someone banged on his door. “Daichi-kun, are you dressed?” The voice of Raiko, the physical incarnation of his zanpakuto Aoi Raiko, called to him.
“Don’t be ridiculous,” he chided. “Of course, I am.”
He threw open the door. “Come on,” he said to Raiko. “We have to see Yachiru.”
Momo had pulled on her shoes and follow him. Wearing only their nightclothes, they ran.
SOUL SOCIETY – ELEVENTH DIVISION – ZARAKI TAICHO’S ROOM
[Alternative M Version Scene:]
Kenpachi Zaraki awoke as Yachiru Thorne Kusajishi’s reiatsu spiked. Beside him, Rangiku Matsumoto, fukutaicho of the tenth division woke up as well. Kenpachi ran for Yachiru’s room.
SOUL SOCIETY – ELEVENTH DIVISION – KUSAJISHI FUKUTAICHO’S ROOM
Kenpachi burst through Yachiru’s door.
“It’s mom.” She tried to control her panic. Rangiku and his third and fifth seats arrived behind him.
He turned to his division members. “Go get Daichi. Now.” They ran.
“What is it?” he asked Yachiru, walking over to his bed.
“Final Revival,” Yachiru said softly.
“Final Revival?” Kenpachi and Rangiku repeated together.
“She couldn’t,” Rangiku said. “Not that.”
Tears welled up in Yachiru’s eyes.
Toshiro Hitsugaya arrived behind them, panting.
They looked at him. He was still in his adult form.
“You picked a hell of a time to grow up, Toshiro,” Kenpachi admonished.
THE PAST LIFE MIRAGE – ROYAL PALACE
Mayuri didn’t remember this place. He had never been here before. Though he could not see the place at first, slowly the plush chairs and benches of the Royal Palace faded into view. He looked down the hallway at servants rushing back and forth. He heard Zangetsu’s voice off in a distance, though he did not know him: “Please, my prince, you must calm down.”
“Calm down?” Mayuri recognized this voice. It was Kail, Ichigo’s hollow and reincarnation of his twin brother.
“You can’t know for sure,” Zangetsu continued.
“He left her!” he shouted. “He left my princess for that guard!” Kail’s shouting became louder and louder.
“Please, my lady,” said Senna beside him, “why won’t you lie down?” Senna’s gaze held him. “You need rest.”
He doubled over in pain, grabbing his chest. He felt like a sword had pierced it.
“My lady!” Senna cried. “Prince Kail, Zangetsu, help us!”
In Urahara’s shop in the human world, Kisuke Urahara and Yoruichi Shihoin slept together in bed. Kisuke held her against himself, hoping to comfort her worries. Their daughter, Shirahime Thorne, had gone missing for some time now in Soul Society. Each day that passed without word depressed her further. Kisuke’s sleep was plagued with dreams of his past life, the one in which Yoruichi had given birth to their daughter, Shirayukihime no Tenjou, Shirahime’s first incarnation. The guilt was suffocating as he saw how much he had rejected her and subjected her to the whims of the royal family which destroyed her.
His memories traveled farther this time, and he didn’t dare tell Yoruichi. Senna, head of Shirayukihime’s guard, came to them to let them know Shirayukihime had been pregnant and didn’t survive the birth. He couldn’t believe that they had been away from their daughter so long he never saw her with child.
Quietly, Senna added this was all Crown Prince Ichigo’s fault for abandoning his wife for the guard Rukia. Tears came to her against her will as she added the child didn’t live long after that.
Kisuke of that time hated himself, picturing the daughter he would no longer see and the grandchild he never knew. Kisuke of this life hated himself as well.
He wondered if he would have the courage to tell Yoruichi he wanted another child, one born in this life. Once Shirahime was found, he wanted a child he could raise from a baby. He wanted one he could do right by,
After Byakuya Kuchiki had come to call on Shirahime, planning to wed her to save her from the royal family’s machinations, he wondered when Shirahime would tell him they were grandparents again. They knew Byakuya loved her, that saving her was not the only reason he wished to marry her.
Of course, he threatened Byakuya from touching his daughter until he wed her. The man was offended. Just what kind of person had Shirahime’s father taken him to be? Byakuya wasn’t the only man he had to worry over. Toshiro Hitsugaya pined over her even now. Then there was Mayuri Kurotsuchi who had gone missing at the same time. Kisuke threatened Toshiro before. Now he wondered if he had to threaten to kill Mayuri.
“Don’t worry,” he said, “Mayuri will take care of her. Believe it or not, he’s actually in love with her. Never thought I’d see the day.”
Dread settled over him. Yoruichi’s breathing hitched. Her eyes shot open. He nearly heard it himself.
